High School Physics Class Discourse Video

This seven minute video was taken in January 2020 in a high school physics class. This was the first lesson I taught and planned for this class. Here, students are working in groups and I am using the 5 Practices to structure discourse. Using the 5 Practices, I select students before calling on them and though I was new to the class and didn't know students' names, I wish I would have asked at least for the selected students' names. I also would no longer call something a "big hard idea" because it is not motivating. While there are some things I would change about my teaching, I hope this gives you a sense of how I interact with students in the classroom.

  1. Integrated 7th Grade Science: Chemical and Physical Changes

This 5-day NGSS-aligned lesson centers on student groups making sense of why a latex balloon pops when an orange peel is squeezed at it. Many students initially and mistakenly attribute the poping to the acid oranges contain when in fact it is oil in the peel that dissolves the rubber. This misconception is leveraged and used as an advantage to reflect on the importance of revising one's ideas as more information is found. Students are also given opportunities to analyze and interpret qualitative and quantitative data and justify their claims with evidence. 2. Integrated 8th Grade Science:

Pressure and Particle Motion

In this 3-day lesson, students learn about pressure and particle motion by investigating Negative Pressure Rooms (NPRs) in hospitals.  NPRs are used to isolate patients with infectious airborne illnesses, like COVID-19, to prevent the spread of these illnesses to other patients and hospital staff. The lesson was written in April of 2020 and includes asynchronous lesson components.
